On October 17, 2024, Mrs. Priscilla Ekwueme Eleje, Executive Director of PEEEI, delivered an insightful presentation at the SALTCIMMA Roundtable in Ebonyi State on the topic “Financial Literacy: Building Confidence and Independence.” Addressing women and youths, she emphasized the critical role financial literacy plays in empowering individuals to manage their finances, break the cycle of poverty, and achieve economic independence.
Mrs. Eleje highlighted key financial challenges in Nigeria, including inflation, unemployment, currency devaluation, and financial exclusion, particularly among women in rural areas. She advocated for actionable strategies such as budgeting, saving, investing, debt management, and leveraging technology to navigate these challenges effectively. She also stressed the importance of advocacy for gender-inclusive financial policies and entrepreneurship as tools for economic empowerment.
Some of the key actionable steps she encouraged participants to engage in includes: start small but stay consistent, continuous learning, networking and mentorship and utilizing available resources such as government programs, microfinance options, fintech platforms designed to support women and small businesses
In recognition of her remarkable achievements, Mrs. Eleje received a special award during the event, acknowledging her as the first female from Ebonyi State to hold her prestigious position and the first woman to sign the Nigerian currency—a groundbreaking milestone in the nation’s history.
