On May 27, 2024, Priscilla Ekwueme Eleje Empowerment Initiative (PEEEI), in collaboration with Kids & Teens Resource Centre (K&TRC), FACICP Disability Plus, His Marvelous Grace Support Foundation (HMGSF), and Child and Youth Protection Foundation (CYPF), organized a heartwarming picnic at the National Children’s Park and Zoo, Asokoro, Abuja. The event commemorated National Children’s Day with a focus on children with disabilities, fostering inclusivity and providing a day of joy for children from Kuje, Karumajigi, and Kabusa communities.
Over 60 children, including those with visual, hearing, and physical impairments, intellectual disabilities, autism, and albinism, participated alongside their caregivers and peers. Activities were designed to ensure every child could partake, from adaptive sports and sensory play to animal encounters and entertainment such as music, dance, and a magic show. The park was specially adapted with wheelchair-accessible pathways, sign language interpreters, and braille materials to guarantee equal participation.
The event underscored the importance of inclusivity, especially as many children with disabilities are often excluded from traditional Children’s Day celebrations. For PEEEI and its partners, the smiles and laughter of the children symbolized the success of the event.
Outcomes:
Over 40 children with disabilities and 20 children without disabilities shared a day of friendship and fun.
Caregivers praised the accessible facilities and thoughtful activities.
New friendships and unforgettable memories were created.
Looking Ahead:
The success of the event highlighted the need for regular, inclusive activities to promote accessibility and joy for all children. PEEEI is committed to inclusivity and fostering collaboration to reach the most vulnerable among us. We believe that every child deserves an opportunity to thrive, and we are working hard to make that a reality.
