Priscilla Ekwueme Eleje Empowerment Initiatives (PEEEI) collaborated with Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) Abuja and Kaduna chapters to celebrate their yearly community day which was equally the fifth edition of the CommunITyDay with the Theme: “Everyone deserves the benefit of a modern connected life in a digital economy. The theme was aimed at ensuring that every individual deserve the benefit of a modern connected life in a digital economy irrespective of location, age, religion, or gender. This event took place concurrently in both states.
PEEEI maximized the platform available to create more awareness on mental health especially issues bordering around Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as our mental health determines our productivity and quality of life.
The day commenced with a heartwarming visit to Victorine Children Home, an orphanage in Gwarinpa, Abuja. This kick-started a series of events dedicated to giving back to the community, with the aim of spreading awareness about mental health issues, particularly concerning Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The turnout for the event was significant, with 23 participants in attendance, alongside 13 children and their caregivers from the orphanage.
The guest speakers, Dr. Kumuyi, a Child Psychologist at Nile University, and Dr. Jonathan Iornenge Ugese, a lecturer at the department of psychology in the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, shed light on the complexities of ADHD and other related disorders at the Abuja and Kaduna chapter respectively. Their presentations highlighted the often-misunderstood aspects of these conditions, emphasizing that ADHD can affect both children and adults, impacting various facets of their lives, including social relationships and performance at work or school.
Additionally, the speakers addressed the multifaceted nature of the causes of ADHD, citing a strong genetic link, environmental factors, and other exacerbating circumstances. They underscored the importance of early detection and intervention in effectively managing the condition, thereby emphasizing the significance of fostering a compassionate and inclusive society.
The day’s events continued with a stimulating volleyball competition organized by ISACA, which was witnessed by Professor Olawale A. Moronkola, the Director General of The National Institute for Sport and the renowned former Super Eagle goalkeeper, Peter Rufai. Following the sports event, a productive discussion session was organized with Prof. Moronkola in company of Mr. Peter Rufai and other member of their teams exploring the potential collaboration between PEEEI and the National Institute of Sport in addressing mental health concerns, particularly those within the context of sports.
Professor Moronkola reaffirmed the critical role of mental health in everyday activities and expressed his support for the proposed collaboration, pending the submission of a comprehensive proposal by the organization.
The day’s proceedings drew to a close at 4:20 pm, with a vote of thanks by Mr. Omoke Emmanuel, the President of ISACA, Abuja Chapter. This collaborative effort between PEEEI and ISACA Abuja and Kaduna Chapters serves as a beacon of hope for the community, emphasizing the importance of mental health awareness and fostering an inclusive society that supports the well-being of all individuals, regardless of their background or circumstances.
